2012-2013 Winter Speaker Series

Falconry: Sport of Kings

Larry Barnes, Master Falconer

Wednesday, October 10th, 7:00pm
Bath City Hall

Join Friends of Merrymeeting Bay (FOMB) on Wednesday, October 10th at 7pm for the 1st   presentation of their 16th annual Winter Speaker Series. This program, “Falconry: Sport of Kings”, features Master Falconer Larry Barnes accompanied by a live peregrine falcon.

Did you know falcons are nature’s fastest flyers? Or that they have been known to migrate over 10,000 miles away…Join Larry Barnes, Maine Master Falconer for a discussion of  peregrine falcons and falconry, once a necessary tool for everyman to put food on the table. Experience a live peregrine falcon up close and learn about their life history and ecology. Do they mate for life? How long do they live?  All your questions will be answered at this fun event, suitable for young and old alike.

In birds of prey, nature and evolution created a highly refined predator. If you're not actually harvesting game, putting game up under your bird every day, then you really aren't practicing falconry. You're keeping a hawk and you're keeping it from doing what it's born to do. A hawk is always going to be a wild animal. Falconers build trust and fidelity with their birds. Larry shares this experience with the peregrine – the dynamic of life, death and survival in the wild.

Barnes is a mid-coast native and third generation realtor. The active conservationist is on the Board of the Wiscasset Conservation Commission, represents the Phippsburg Sportsman's Association on the Board of the Phippsburg Land Trust, is a member of the Wiscasset Area Chamber of Commerce and other state and local organizations. Larry practices this ancient art along with only nine others in Maine, one that few know still exists in America.

The FOMB Winter Speaker Series takes place monthly from October-May on the second Wednesday. The series, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by Friends of Merrymeeting Bay with support and valuable door prizes from Patagonia Outlet in Freeport. The next FOMB presentation on November 14th at the Bowdoinham Town Office Building entitled The Craft, Art & Collection of Waterfowl Decoys features Zachery Cote, assistant auction manager, gallery manager and New England representative for Guyette, Schmidt & Deeter, Auctioneers.
